BUCS Nationals 2009

Three of our four top-performing teams this season (qualifying criteria: winning Champions League group & reaching Champions League QFs) competed in the BUCS National Intra-Mural Five-A-Side Football Championships, held in April at Goals Soccer Centre, Perry Barr, Birmingham. A coach was laid on for our three teams by uw5 President, Rich Gledhill, who accompanied our teams on the day. The event was an entertaining exhibition of football and provided our attending members with the chance to play at excellent facilities against a strong line-up of teams from universities nationwide, each attempting to be crowned the best side in the country.

Raining Champions stormed through the group stages, finishing top of their group with a 100% record. The team shone, scoring an impressive 14 goals in the group stages – a feat which was only bettered by the eventual winners (National Champions), Garth Gibbs of Northumbria University. Squad Rejects – TANZANIA also finished top of their group, winning 3 of their 4 games, including a victory over the eventual runners-up, Bin Day Wednesdays (Bournemouth University). Machine Theory also progressed through a tough group – which included Garth Gibbs – to ensure that all 3 of our teams reached the knockout stages of the main Cup competition. Raining Champions and Machine Theory met in the Last 16, with Machine Theory progressing courtesy of a tight 2-1 win. Squad Rejects – TANZANIA lost narrowly 1-0 to Archers Road (Southampton University) in their Last 16 game. In the Quarter Finals, Machine Theory were unfortunate to cruelly lose on penalties to the eventual runners-up, Bin Day Wednesdays (Bournemouth University).

With our teams all reaching at least the Last 16 in the country – and one going a stage further and reaching the national Quarter-Finals – the strength of five-a-side at Warwick was demonstrated! A great day out was had by all, and the competition is set to become a regular feature in the Club calendar!
